Our History
In the 1940s, Martinez was predominately open space and agricultural fields, with neighborhoods just starting to fill land in the area.
A local resident, Bill Wygal, began building houses in the hours he wasn't welding, at Tidewater, a local oil refinery. He couldn't find a main resource for all the materials he needed for his projects. He and his wife Elva met that challenge by deciding to bring a complete hardware store to Martinez.

Together, in May of 1948, they opened Vine Hill Hardware on Pacheco Boulevard. They started out with just $5,000 in inventory and a strong desire to succeed. They worked seven days a week that first year, taking special orders and traveling to San Francisco to get merchandise their customers requested. Soon Bill and Elva had a four-store chain serving Martinez, Pleasant Hill, Concord and North Concord.
In 1966, they joined the cooperative, Ace Hardware, and the business became known as Ace Hardware. This affiliation provides the store the ability to offer lower prices and carry more inventory, yet give friendly, local service. That was always the goal of Bill and Elva: to treat every customer as you would a best friend and help them with every need.
In 1967 Bill and Elva retired, passing their business on to their three dedicated sons. The goal of the store has always remained the same. The more than 100 employees deliver personal, helpful service every day. To honor that heritage, the store was renamed Bill's Ace Hardware after Bill passed away in 2002.
Bill's Ace Hardware is more than just materials and products, it is a place filled with commitment to employees, customers and the wider community, and to the environment. Now in it's third generation, Bill's Ace continues to grow.
